A Tracer Study of Graduates of The School of Agriculture and Biotechnology; University of Eldoret

Abstract

This tracer study sought to establish the reasons for declining students’ enrollment in the School of Agriculture and Biotechnology at the University of Eldoret. While the School, that had in the recent past had registered sterling performance in several areas, such as attracting huge research funds, both locally and internationally, it’s students’ enrollment drastically dropped. The study therefore sought to answer the question; what is responsible for this down ward trend of enrollment? While several factors may be cited for this, the issue of the quality and relevance of the academic programmes come to the fore. The specific objectives of this study were to: profile the graduates of School of Agriculture (SAGR) programmes, establish the employment status of graduates of the School, find out the average duration that graduates of the School unemployed before securing their first employment, determine the relevance of knowledge and skills acquired at University of Eldoret by graduates in securing and being effective in their present employment and and establish the graduates’ level of satisfaction with the knowledge and skills acquired at the University of Eldoret. The study employed descriptive survey and a case study design. The school had graduated a total of 2,971 students across all programs since 2014 to 2018. Stratified random sampling was used to identify 894 respondents for the study. Data was collected using a questionnaire and interview schedules. Data analysis was mainly descriptive. With regard to employment the study found that majority of the respondents graduated without employment. Most of the unemployed however secured employment within two years of graduation. At the time of study, a group of about 20% were unemployed. The study concluded that the University has not been very supportive in linking the graduates to possible employers.  Generally, the respondents noted that the knowledge and skills acquired at University of Eldoret were both relevant to the job market and for further studies. They however noted that more practical aspects need to be infused in the curriculum to increase competitiveness of graduates. The study recommended that practical aspects need to be infused in the curriculum. Comprehensive curriculum review should in future be preceded by such tracer studies for maximum benefit.
